RSE Programme

A well-structured Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) programme is essential in helping children develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to form healthy, respectful and positive relationships.

At Shrewsbury House, our pupils receive Relationships Education from Year 3 to Year 6 and Relationships and Sex Education from Year 7 to Year 8. The focus in Year 3 to Year 6 is on teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships and relationships with other children and adults. The programme is shaped by active input from parents, staff and pupils, fostering an open and inclusive approach to this key element of our holistic education.

Helping Pupils Develop Healthy Relationships

In Year 7 and Year 8, our focus shifts to providing our young people with the knowledge they need to develop healthy, nurturing relationships in all areas of life - not just intimate relationships. This helps them understand what a healthy relationship looks like, the qualities of a good friend, colleague and partner, and what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in relationships.

School Values

Our school values of respect, integrity and compassion underpin all aspects of Relationships and Sex Education. Through the delivery of this subject, we provide pupils with the knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their well-being, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy.

Topics and themes covered in the subject will help to support our pupils develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support. Parents are well-informed and are given the opportunity to attend talks and workshops throughout the year, to enable seamless support between home and school.
